As an Aussie, my favourite place in the whole of Aus is Port Douglas, juts south of there Palm Cove, is great for resorts if thats what your after
Depends how far north you are going. Whitsundays north of Mackay is stunning...mainland, islands aor on a boat! Cairns is a wonderful entry to the Great Barrier Reef, a the Daintree rainforests. It is a massive state and there are many things to see and do 'within 100kms' of the main highway.
