OLIVE: Apart from being interested in pre-teen beauty contests. She's funny with Dwayne, tender with Grandpa, giddy or doubting when left alone. Olive is the hub that holds together the family, which acts in concert only on her behalf.

Olive's Mom: Working mom Sheryl is the juggler who tries to gratify everyone.

Olive's Dad: Richard is a motivational speaker who can't win over his own kin.

FRANK: is the nation's foremost authority on Marcel Proust, at least in his mind, and the dumpee in an affair that led to a suicide attempt.

DWAYNE: reads Nietzsche and has taken a vow of silence until he's admitted to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he expects to become a jet pilot.

GRANDpa: The unnamed Grandpa snorts heroin and peruses porn.

The freshest part of the film is the journey toward this (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE - A pre-teen beauty contest) unsavory goal, as the six try to drive from Albuquerque, N.M., to Redondo Beach without driving each other nuts.
